Do's & Don'ts of Fire Damage

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

As temperatures begin to rise, and we enter into summer, the risk for fires greatly increases. Even if you don't live in a high risk wildfire zone, the hot, dry weather still makes residential and commercial fires dangerous. The high temperature and dry winds help fuel the fire, causing more damage. If your home or business is affected by fire or smoke damage, follow these steps below, then give SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties a call            209-912-9205

What to do after a fire:

  • Keep hands clean and wear gloves so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Avoid spreading soot through the home by placing clean towels or old linens on high traffic areas and carpet.
  • If the electricity is off, empty the freezer and refrigerator as soon as possible and prop doors open to avoid odor from rotting food. Make sure to take photos for insurance purposes.
  • Wash houseplants gently on both sides of leaves.

What NOT to do after a fire:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may result in permanent damage.

Rain, Rain go Away!

12/29/2021 (Permalink)

With the relentless series of storms we've seen since last December, SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties has seen a marked increase in water damage from roof leaks. Roof leaks can be a challenge to deal with! A roof leak only happens at the worst possible time, typically during the peak of a heavy rain/windstorm.

Roofs will leak for a number of reasons, including shoddy construction, holes made by animals, missing shingles thanks to intense wind and rain, problems with plumbing vents, damaged flashing and clogged and overflowing gutters. Consider the age of the roof, too. It may be so old and worn that it’s time for a proper replacement. Additionally, skylights and chimneys traditionally leak because they’re essentially sealed holes in the roof! There's a joke, there's 2 types of skylights, those that leak and those that will....

Typically you’ll see staining on a wall or ceiling that will give you an idea you have a leak coming from somewhere. In extreme cases SERVPRO of Lodi has been called out when the ceiling has already come crashing down. The insulation in attics is very absorbent and can hold quite a bit of water; a slow leak can take weeks sometimes to reveal itself, usually with a loud crash and ceiling drywall and insulation covering everything in the house!

The best time to trace where the leak is coming from is to examine its trail as best you can when it’s raining outside. SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties has the tools to help track the leak to its source. Once it's found a roofer can come by and either temporarily tarp the roof or get it repaired if the rains stopped! SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties 209-912-9205

Why is Insurance Important

9/27/2021 (Permalink)

Everyone makes sure we have car insurance, health insurance, and sometimes we have health insurance for our pets too! It's also important to have insurance for our homes, whether it be a homeowners or renters insurance policy.

A survey conducted by the Insurance Information Institute in 2014 stated that although 95% of homeowners had homeowners insurance, only 37% of renters had an insurance policy. Renters insurance is very important and policies usually cover personal contents such as furniture and jewelry in the event of a fire, water damage, or due to theft. The cost of renters insurance is also very affordable, generally at less than $20/month. It can also help cover the cost of living expenses while your residence is being restored.

Take care to also be informed of what your policy includes. For example, earthquakes and flooding from outside water are rarely included and would be a separate policy.

If you don't have insurance, the costs can be excessive. At SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties offer competitive pricing and will do our best to work within your budget. We are "Here to Help" 209-912-9205

Seconds Count in a Fire

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

Fire experts agree, people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out.* In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared and have an escape plan in place. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross shows only 26 percent of families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Once a plan is developed, it is critical everyone in the home understands the plan; the best way to do this is by practicing the escape plan at least twice a year. Increase your chance of surviving a fire by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing the escape plan. Here are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan.

Draw a map of each level of your home and show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.

Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.

Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.

Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.

SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties is ready at a moments notice to help get you and your home back to its preloss condition. We're available 24/7 at 209-912-9205

Why SERVPRO for Construction Protection

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

Every construction project, no matter how large or small, will create a cleaning project. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep post construction cleaning to a minimum, all of which SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties can provide. We work with numerous local remodeling contractors to be sure your home is kept clean and dust free throughout the rebuilding process.

Pre-construction site protection certainly has some financial benefits.  It will reduce required labor, prevent incidental damage to unprotected areas, and shorten project lifetime. Containment also has some safety benefits – it creates a safety barrier to keep non-construction people away from the work area and it will help prevent the spread of airborne particles/construction dust, some of which may be toxic and difficult to clean completely.

Overtime these particles settle over surfaces and belongings, traveling through HVAC systems and permeating throughout the home. It is possible to suffer from post construction dust for months or even years, especially if the HVAC system has not been properly sealed or cleaned. This can negatively affect the occupants, chiefly those with compromised immune systems or those sensitive to allergens.

Our IICRC certified team creates a site protection plan in accordance to each customer’s unique needs. Construction and site protection can at times be obstructive to those who choose to occupy the home throughout the project. However, our team strives to design contaminate shields that won’t compromise the occupants’ use of the home. By utilizing our vast range of materials to protect HVAC systems, carpeting, walls, ceilings, and everything in between,

SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties can save you time, money and headaches. Available 24/7 Call 209-912-9205

  • Heavy rain and poor drainage causes water to pool around your home

  • Storm sewer backup

  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Water damage should be handled quickly and properly in order to prevent further damage and possibly mold growth. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.

Why Insurance is Important

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

It's important to have insurance for our homes, whether it be a homeowners or renters insurance policy.

It is more common for homeowners to have insurance than for renters to have it. According to a survey conducted by The Insurance Information Institute in 2014, although 95% of homeowners had homeowners insurance, as little as 37% of renters had an insurance policy. Renters insurance is very important and policies usually cover personal contents such as furniture and jewelry in the event of a fire, water damage, or due to theft. The cost of renters insurance is also very affordable, generally at less than $20/month. It can also help cover the cost of living expenses while your residence is being restored.

It is important to also be informed of what your policy includes. For example, earthquakes and flooding from outside water are rarely included and would be a separate policy.

If you don't have insurance, the costs can be excessive. At SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties we offer competitive pricing and will do our best to work with your budget.

Smoke Alarms Saves

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

For the past 3 weeks as I've stood in my front yard of my home I've heard an annoying chirp of one of my neighbors smoke alarms letting them (and me!) know that the batteries are low. While we joke that the alarm battery usually runs down at 3:00 AM, there is a reason behind the madness!

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half. The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps", the battery is low and should be replaces right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

The Pros of Duct Cleaning

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

While your commercial business is focused on providing a service, it’s easy to forget the services you need as well. One thing you should always put first is making sure that your employees are breathing clean air and are operating in a safe work environment. Chemicals, pollen, construction debris and dust can easily be transferred from the exterior of a building to interior through the air duct system. Here are a few advantages to having your building’s HVAC system professionally cleaned by a SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties professional:

  • Allergies & Dust - Having your commercial business’s air ducts cleaned by SERVPRO can help fight allergies because pollen and dust particles will be removed in the process and the affected area will become sanitized and more conducive to a safe work environment.
  • Efficiency - Years of dust, hair, pests, and other pollutants in ductwork will hinder an HVAC system’s airflow. A proper cleaning will help remove the buildup and promote the proper airflow needed to run the system at peak efficiency.
  • Eliminate Odor - The professional technicians at SERVPRO use their specialized chemicals to break down the molecular bonds that create troublesome odors. This helps to improve the overall air quality within the entire building and reduces the chances of your employees feeling uncomfortable from strange and unsettling odors that may linger in the air.

For all of your commercial duct cleaning needs - Call SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties 209-912-9205

Do's and Don't for Fire Damage

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Rain, Rain Go AWAY!!

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties is "Here to Help"

With the relentless series of storms we've seen since last December, SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties has seen a marked increase in water damage from roof leaks. Roof leaks can be a challenge to deal with! A roof leak happens at the worst possible time, typically during the peak of a heavy rain or windstorm.

A roof will leak for a number of reasons, including shoddy construction, holes made by animals, missing shingles thanks to intense wind and rain, problems with plumbing vents, damaged flashing and clogged and overflowing gutters. Consider the age of the roof, too. It may be so old and worn that it’s time for a proper replacement. Additionally, skylights and chimneys traditionally leak because they’re essentially sealed holes in the roof! There's a joke, there's 2 types of skylights, those that leak and those that will....

Typically you’ll see a stain on a wall or ceiling that’ll give you an idea you have a leak coming from somewhere.

In extreme cases SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties has been called out when the ceiling has already come crashing down.

Importance of Insurance

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

We make sure that we have car insurance, health insurance, and sometimes we have health insurance for our pets too!

Seconds Count in a Fire

8/25/2020 (Permalink)

The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan.

We're available 24/7/365 at 209-912-9205

By utilizing our vast range of materials to protect HVAC systems, carpeting, walls, ceilings, and everything in between, SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties can save you time, money and headaches.

Prepare For High Temperatures and Fires

7/15/2020 (Permalink)

With temperatures rising the risk of fire becomes extremely dangerous. Make sure you and your family is prepared for an emergency by having a "kit" handy.  Periodically check your kit to see that batteries operate properly. The following is a list of items that are suggested to keep in your kit:

1. Flashlights for each family member

2. Battery-operated radio and clock

3. Extra batteries

4. Containers of bottled water

5. Canned, freeze-dried or dehydrated food, powdered milk, baby supplies for infants

6. Non-electric can opener

7. List of important phone numbers

8. First-aid kit

Stock canned foods, dry mixes and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils. The following items are suggested when selecting emergency food supplies. You may already have many of these on hand.

•Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

•Choose foods your family will eat.

•Remember any special dietary needs.

•Avoid foods that will make you thirsty.

•Choose salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals and canned foods with high liquid content.

•Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener

•Protein or fruit bars

•Dry cereal or granola

•Peanut butter

•Dried fruit

•Nuts

•Crackers

•Canned juices

•Non-perishable pasteurized milk

•High energy foods

•Vitamins

•Food for infants

Why Insurance Is Important

6/30/2020 (Permalink)

It's standard to have insurance for our cars, health, and sometimes even our pets too! It's also important to have insurance for our homes, whether it be a homeowners or renters insurance policy.

Fire Damage - Do's and Don'ts

5/29/2020 (Permalink)

As temperatures begin to rise, and we enter into summer, the risk for fires greatly increases. Even if you don't live in a high risk wildfire zone, the hot, dry weather still makes residential and commercial fires dangerous. The high temperature and dry winds help fuel the fire, causing more damage. If your home or business is affected by fire or smoke damage, follow these steps below, then give SERVPRO of Amador/Calaveras Counties a call.
